Day 1: And So the Race Begins!
On Wednesday, 11th December, a day earlier than planned, the Mayflower Crew embarked on what can only be described as the adventure of a lifetime. At 8:15 am (UK time), they pushed off from La Gomera, Spain, joining 37 teams from across the globe in the start of the World's Toughest Row—a gruelling 3,000-mile journey across the mighty Atlantic Ocean.
How the Race Started
The buzz of anticipation was palpable as the teams lined up on the start line, their oars poised and spirits high. After months (if not years) of preparation, the moment had arrived. Supporters and spectators cheered as the boats disappeared into the horizon, beginning their epic journey.
The First 24 Hours
The first 24 hours have seen a good start for the boys, they’ve pushed hard to get as far south/south east as possible. The winds are now turning against them (as expected) and so you’ll see the boats starting to slow their speeds. A quick call this morning from the boat shows them focused on their position within the fleet (they don’t have access to the info we have) and the ginger biscuits are being broken out to help calm the tums from queasiness.
Sea sickness is a right of passage for the majority of people during the crossing, it can last from as little as a few hours to a week or so. The boys are all wearing little dots behind their ears which help to keep the symptoms at bay- ginger is amazing for settling tums naturally along with SIS tablets in their water bottles to help keep them hydrated.
Big thanks to their sponsors SIS who kindly provided all their hydration/energy tablets and gels.
And finally, there was a flurry of donations yesterday as they set off and their fundraising currently stands at just over £126k!!!
